__La halle inox..THE "HALLE INOX"__

.."This place is full of history: one can sense the presence of those who lived and worked within these walls for nearly a century. And so the story continues, as we add to it our own experiences, lives and work. We are so fortunate to have such a fantastic opportunity to be able to continue this great history by adding a little of our own to the mix."__

__Origines d’un monument..ORIGINS OF A MONUMENT__

Before the workshop belonging to the metal engineering company ACMV (Ateliers de Constructions Mécaniques de Vevey) was built, the land was home to vines, fields and a chocolate factory. And it was in that very building that the carpenter's son, Benjamin Roy, built his workshop back in 1842. Initially his work involved "repairing farm machinery and producing mill wheels and screws for presses".__

 __L’ESSOR INDUSTRIEL..INDUSTRIAL BOOM__

..From the second half of the 19th century, Vevey – which had been sited at the crossroads of major commercial routes since antiquity – underwent a boom period of industrial development and quickly became the second most important town in the canton of Vaud in terms of population and economic power. This industrial growth was due, in particular, to the harnessing of the hydraulic power of the Veveyse river. This area was home to a large tannery, a marble works, a foundry, a cigar factory, the Cailler chocolate factory, and even the factories of Henri Nestlé.__

__La naissance des ACMV..THE BIRTH OF ACMV__

». .. It was in this context of rapid growth, further stimulated by the arrival of the railway in 1861 and the construction of Vevey station nearby, that Benjamin Roy (our carpenter's son) left behind the production of mill wheels and screws for presses, in favour of manufacturing hydraulic turbines. The year was 1863. Over the years, as the company diversified its activities, Roy turned his attention to the "construction of metal frames and bridges" and became interested in "irrigation problems, the construction of canals and tunnel boring". In 1895, after having changed hands several times, the company was taken over by Ami Chessex, who founded "Ateliers des Constructions Mécaniques de Vevey S.A."__

__La halle..THE BUILDING__

..In 1918, the CFF (the Swiss Federal Railway), which was electrifying its network, created several factories and generated a very high demand, particularly for turbines to make use of hydraulic energy. Several other Swiss companies were also undergoing expansion in this immediate post-war period. ACMV successfully responded to the demand and built a test station for hydraulic turbines to test propeller turbines, a new technology from the United States.__

..The following year, in 1919, ACMV received three significant orders from important customers: the Jogne factory of the Swiss Electricity company, Entreprises Électriques fribourgeoises; the new station at the power plant in the municipality of Wynau with its large propeller turbines (the first in Europe); and the CFF factory in Amsteg. That same year, ACMV decided to build a new workshop to bring its foundry work, machining, assembly and adjustment of turbines under one roof.__

..The new turbine assembly workshop was designed by architect Ferdinand Kurz. The career of this man, and his life in general, are somewhat shrouded in mystery. He had no formal qualification and appears to have trained on-the-job, in the region. Although the grounds for his being chosen for this role remain a matter of conjecture, one thing is certain: the workshop which he designed is now considered to be the last standing testimonial to Vevey's great industrial past.__

..Designed from the start as a "showcase" for ACMV, the building is "visible from all the trains which run from London to Venice". The style chosen by Ferdinand Kurz is described as "regional baroque": "finely chiselled arched mouldings subtly mimic colossal antique columns, framing semi-circular arches topped with oculi". Taking the form of a single 9500 m3 space, the building often saw changes of use throughout its history. It was in 1973, when turbines were entirely assembled in other buildings and the workshop was dedicated to "stainless steel boiler making", that the building became known as the "halle inox" (meaning the "stainless steel workshop").__

..When ACMV went bankrupt in 1992, the building was completely abandoned. The region retained its industrial skills base thanks to Andritz Hydro in Vevey, Bombardier Transport in Villeneuve, and APCO Technologies in Aigle. Still visible from all the trains running through Vevey, the building remained there still, standing as a monument to its history. For over twenty years, it stood silently while local kids threw stones from the other bank of the Veveyse, smashing its windows, one by one. Little by little, its old bricks were covered with graffiti and its painted sign was worn away by the wind. But it alone would survive, in 2009, when all the surrounding annexes were levelled as part of site restoration work.__

..Year after year, all sorts of plans were proposed, but none came to fruition until Giovanni Pezzoli – the man behind the new district of Les Moulins built on the land of the former industrial site – was put in charge of the restoration work which had finally been agreed. The building's dignity was restored, and it was given a new identity, to enable it to play a new role in the history of its city. But its designer was not content to let the building live on merely as a museum. Fittingly, in its new reincarnation, it would be home to life – real life – as it was turned into lofts and a restaurant.__

__Ce restaurant s’appellera Les Ateliers. ..The restaurant would be called "Les Ateliers" (meaning "the workshops"). __
